Afif Kanaan
Manufacturing Intern, Fawdon

My name is Afif and I’m from Lebanon. I first joined Nestlé in the UK on a summer internship during the summer of 2015, while I was undertaking my Masters in Business Administration (MBA). I spent 10 weeks in the Fawdon factory in Newcastle in a support role in Goal Alignment and Focused Improvement.

My two main cross-functional projects while in the Fawdon factory were to review the operational budget of year 2015 (from a machine as well as a labour point of view) in order to support the 2016 factory operational budget setting. This meant that I was able to work closely with the Finance team. The second project was about enhancing ways of working for the shift managers and how they spend their time while at work. This will enable Nestlé to achieve the minimum required percentage of process improvement activities to be completed by a shift manager.

After graduating from my MBA, I joined the Manufacturing Graduate Programme in September 2016. I had the opportunity to work in three different factories across the UK covering three different businesses: Confectionery, Coffee, and now Petfood & Petcare.

In the past two years, I’ve supported factories in focused improvement projects, helped implement standard routines and accelerated and embedded manufacturing excellence tools, such as Total Performance Management (TPM). All those experiences have given me great exposure to the shop floor and enabled me to meet a lot of people in the operations community of Nestlé in the UK.

My best experience at Nestlé so far has been a visit to our Nescafé factory in Girona, Spain as part of a project I was working on while in Tutbury on my first placement. This enabled me to see Nestlé outside the UK, realise how global this business is, and recognise that opportunities can be available anywhere.

Nestlé is a great place to work. A lot of opportunities are available to learn and grow, not only professionally but also personally.
